Recent statistics of flu activity indicate that the 2018-2019 flu season is well underway. According to ABC News reports, outpatient clinic visits for flu-like symptoms at the close of 2018 were double what they are the rest of the year.
Meanwhile, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that almost 6 percent of patient samples sent to the lab from Sept. 30 through December have been flu-positive. For the last week of December, the total was more than 13 percent.
Flu rates usually peak in the U.S. between December and February. Most states are currently reporting low to moderate flu activity, although 19 states are seeing higher levels.
This season, however, deaths from flu and pneumonia, are not at epidemic levels as they were last year. The current number U.S. deaths per week associated with the flu is around 40.
In addition to getting the vaccine, regular handwashing plays an important role in preventing the spread of germs. The facility team plays a significant role in the support and education of workplace handwashing efforts.
Ways cleaning managers can help maintain a healthy workplace include:
• Outfit restrooms, dining areas and other locations with a sink with signs to remind employees and visitors of the importance of hand hygiene
• Equip janitorial teams with quality hand sanitizing and surface disinfecting products
• Stock up on soap and hand towels. Some sensor-equipped dispensers can remotely track supply levels.
