October Is National Toilet Repair Month

Water conserving toilets not only help the environment, but they can help save money on water bills as well. However, many flapper-style toilets need repair after just a few years in order to maintain their effectiveness and water efficiency. 

October is National Toilet Repair Month and Niagara Conservation, a Texas-based manufacturer of water and energy conservation products, is sharing tips on how to keep a toilet running smoothly for years to come.

1. Prevent clogs

Only flush toilet paper and be sure to use a reasonable amount. Use roughly 8.6 sheets per trip. Be mindful that certain absorbent toilet paper doesn’t dissolve well, and the thickness can cause clogging. To test toilet paper thickness, put a square of toilet paper into a toilet, wait a few minutes, and then go check on it. If the toilet paper is at least partially dissolved, the toilet paper is probably not an issue. However, if it still looks the same as when it was put it in, the toilet paper is too thick. Also make sure to never flush anything that could be damaging, like food, feminine hygiene products, or trash.

2. Clean hard water deposits

Over time, hard water deposits may clog toilet rim holes and trapways. To clean, use a commercial cleaner that is recommended for the removal of hard water deposits. 

3. Use the right cleaning products 

Follow the label directions and use the toilet bowl cleaners on the inside of the bowl only. Do not use in-tank toilet cleaners as they can damage the flush valve or other working parts. Wipe any splashes of cleaning solution from plastic or plated surfaces immediately.
