The latest data from the Centers for Disease Control And Prevention (CDC) shows 11 deaths occurred during the 11th week of the 2019-2020 flu season, bringing the grand total for the season to 136.
The weekly data, which was collected up to Feb. 29, further demonstrates how children and young adults have struggled with the flu this year. The CDC estimates that there have been at least 34 million flu illnesses in the United States this year across all age groups, resulting 350,000 hospitalizations and 20,000 deaths.
Statistics used to track flu activity remain high, though the CDC did notice a decrease in those numbers for the third week in a row. New York City, Puerto Rico and 40 states still report high influenza-like illness activity. Only two states (Arizona and Florida) and Washington, D.C. are down to low flu activity. Eight states report either moderate or low flu activity.
