According to Euronews, the bacteria named "anammox bugs" lives off of waste water, making it a Earth-friendly way to treat water. By eating through the sewage, the bacteria get rid of nitrogen and ammonium, which improves the quality of the water. By eating the sewage, the bacteria are also saving one water management company a half a million in Australian dollars per year.

Using these bacteria to clean water is more appealing than other options involving the use of chemicals and energy. However, there is one negative to using the bacteria in that they take a long time to grow.
