Not since the Great Recession has an event re-shaped the cleaning industry like the coronavirus pandemic. This is especially true in commercial offices, where operations stuttered and workers were sent home, leaving facilities to sit vacant for prolonged periods of time. Meanwhile, public school districts, colleges and universities were forced to lay off or furlough cleaning workers when the pandemic shut facilities down. As these same facilities now reopen, the cleaning demands are higher than ever. 

To analyze the situation and help cleaning teams rebound, Contracting Profits, Facility Cleaning Decisions, fnPrime and Building Service Contractors Association International (BSCAI) surveyed more than 500 facility executives of a dozen-plus building types to determine the cleaning costs and frequencies for each building type. The results are now available in the 2021 Cleaning Costs & Frequency Report. 

This research report outlines and analyzes current cleaning price-per-square-foot averages in commercial offices, K-12 schools, colleges/universities, hospitals, outpatient clinics, religious buildings, government facilities and much more. It also compares current metrics to pre-pandemic research from 2018.

Cleaning professionals can use this data to compare themselves to peers. Building service contractors can gauge whether they are pricing themselves out of the market or leaving money on the table. In-house facility cleaning managers can determine if their cleaning costs are too high and need to be more efficient, or argue they can't cut budgets any lower.

Cost per square foot is also broken out by geographical region as cost of living varies across the country, which affects pricing levels.

Cleaning cost data is just the beginning of this report. Facility executives were also asked to provide janitorial staffing levels for their buildings. This data is broken down into three distinct positions: night-time janitors, day porters or day-time cleaners, and project workers such as window washing or floor stripping crews. Data is shared based on facility size to help BSCs and in-house departments determine appropriate staffing levels.

Finally, the data also takes a deep dive into cleaning frequencies for 16 tasks in these facility types: corporate offices, multi-tenant offices, K-12 schools, colleges/universities, hospitals/long-term care and government facilities.
