Among the notable cleaning trends of 2022 is the increased acceptance and popularity of robotic floor machines larger-scale facilities. With more competitors entering the fold, the concept was a big hit at ISSA North America 2022, and is a trend almost certain to gain further traction in 2023. 

Among the newcomers to the technology is Hawaii’s Big Island’s Daniel K. Inouye International Airport, with the state’s department of transportation recently announcing the purchase of robotic floor equipment. 

According to coverage from Big Island Now, the investment from the airport is estimated to be $157,000 once training is included, and are intended to play a supplementary role to assist the janitorial staff — taking on the more time-consuming monotonous tasks so employees can focus their energy on other requirements around the facility. 

While the machines can be manually operated as ride-ons, they can also be programmed to complete jobs without humans present, capable of taking on large quantities of the 230,00 square foot airport concourse without direct supervision required. Big Island’s Daniel K. Inouye International Airport averages 73,000 arrivals per day (a number certain to jump during holiday travels) making cleaning efficiency a requirement for the cleaning and maintenance staff.
