After months of campaigning for unionization which included organized demonstrations, custodians servicing the Anheuser Busch Brewer and Corporate Center in St. Louis finally achieved their goal. As reported by Labor Tribune, union contractor Clean-Tech agreed to take over day-to-day operations, effective earlier this week on Jan. 8.
With the agreement comes benefits and job protections for the custodians under Clean-Tech. Back in May of last year, Aramark secured a three-year contract with the Anheuser Busch facility where the custodians in-question have since been servicing. While the Aramark deal still stands, those employees will now be subcontracted to Clean-Teach where the aforementioned benefits and unionization will go into effect to avoid any ongoing labor disputes with SEIU Local 1. As an entity, Aramark remains non-union in St. Louis.
The unionization agreement affects approximately 1,800 custodians in St. Louis and the surrounding metro area. A spokesperson for SEIU 1 noted that the agreement is a huge victory for the workers, as janitorial operations will continue at the Anheuser Busch facility, but under significantly improved labor terms for the frontline staff.
