The new Urban Plains Center (now known as Sheels Arena) in Fargo, North Dakota, seats 5,000 spectators. In 2007, the center broke ground and officially opened about three years later. When it did, the arena proved to be an immediate success. More than 188,000 people visited the arena in its first six months and public officials admitted they underestimated the appeal of such a sports facility. But Fargo apparently has a “need for ice,” and because of this, is now the home of United States Hockey League’s Fargo Force, one of the top ice hockey teams in the country.
The facility is not only large, it is designed to be environmentally friendly as well. In fact, the developers are seeking LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification.
Some of the systems incorporated to make the facility more sustainable include geothermal heating, motion-sensing lighting, and waterless urinals manufactured and installed by Waterless Co. Inc.
The Waterless urinal system uses absolutely no water to operate. Not only do these systems save precious water, but the trap/cylinder installed in Waterless urinals is one of the longest-lasting and least expensive in the industry. This means the Sheels Arena not only saves water it saves another valuable resource as well: money.
