The Malibu Lumber Yard, a 32,000-square-foot retail center located in the heart of Malibu, California, was built 95 years ago and recently restored to its original look.

To preserve the historic site, restorers used modern materials to help protect the environment.

According to published reports, the design succeeds in creating a modern yet authentic interpretation of the facility through the use of more natural, sustainable building materials and products.

As part of the upgrade, builders took several sustainable measures, especially to conserve water due to California’s chronic water shortages.

These include installing drip irrigation systems, low-flow faucets and toilets, and waterless urinals. After analyzing several systems, they selected waterless urinals manufactured by Waterless Co., LLC.

As the name implies waterless urinals use no-water. Urine passes thru a cylinder at the base of the urine underneath a trap/cylinder. The cylinder prevents sewer odors from being released into the restroom but allows the urine to flow into drainage pipes, similar to traditional urinals.

Waterless no-flush urinals are odorless, easy to maintain, have the same or similar footprint of a conventional urinal so they are perfect for retrofits, have long-lasting, inexpensive cartridges, and were the first no-water urinal systems introduced into the United States.
