According to TripAdvisor, which provides "trusted reviews on hotels, restaurants, and travel attractions," when it comes to hotel guest rooms, carpets can play a major role on whether guests like or dislike the hotel.
"Floors typically give visitors a first impression of a facility," says Bob Abrams, product manager for U.S. Products Jan/san Division. "However, when it comes to hotel guest rooms, it's the carpet that makes the lasting impression of the guest room and the hotel."
This is supported by the many hotel reviews found on TripAdvisor's website. While some guests report a hotel may be overall satisfactory, invariably it is a soiled carpet that
upsets the applecart, causing guests to leave less than complimentary reviews.
For example:
"...even though the price was right, I wouldn't stay there again. The hotel room carpet was disgusting; I'd say the dirty carpet was the deal breaker."
"We are major fans [of this hotel chain]...the decor is [pleasant] and bed comfortable, but the stale cigarette smell and dirty carpet affect giving it a higher rating."
"I like this hotel...[but I] was appalled at the condition of the carpets. There are stains everywhere! They really need to clean the carpets. Like what the heck happened to them?"
"Everything was average...[but my] socks were dirty from walking on [the] carpet in the room...Needs some carpet cleaning before I come back again."
"At $111.00 per night [I expected a nice room]. But the carpet was filthy, smelled of smoke, I would not have brought my wife into this motel."
"As you can see, carpets do have an impact on what people think about a hotel, even if everything else about the property is okay,” adds Abrams. "Hotel managers should know this and also know that cleaning carpets with hot-water carpet extractors on a regular basis can alleviate these problems...and these bad reviews."
