Leaders across the cleaning product supply chain are expressing concern over the potential dismantling or privatization of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Safer Choice program. This voluntary labeling initiative identifies consumer products formulated with ingredients that meet stringent health and environmental safety standards.
The industry's apprehension stems from the program's inclusion in Project 2025, a policy manifesto aligned with former President Donald J. Trump, which advocates for significant cuts in government spending and regulation.
The American Cleaning Institute (ACI) and its members fear that eliminating Safer Choice would remove a critical incentive for chemical manufacturers to develop and utilize environmentally safer chemistries. Consumers may lose access to certified products or experience a decline in confidence if the program is privatized.
Safer Choice, which primarily focuses on cleaning ingredients and finished products, is funded through industry fees and operates on a budget of approximately $4 million. Industry stakeholders emphasize the program's reputation for rigor and independence, crucial for maintaining consumer trust.
John Schierlmann of IndSpyre Solutions highlights the program's importance in marketing sustainable chemistry. He warns that privatization could dilute the program's credibility and increase costs for brands.
Concerns also extend to the potential vulnerability of confidential formulation information if the program is transferred to a private operator. Industry representatives stress the need to protect trade secrets and prevent the proliferation of counterfeit products.
In a show of solidarity, over 200 chemical firms, consumer product companies, retailers, and industry advocacy groups have signed an open letter to the EPA, urging the agency to preserve Safer Choice. The letter underscores the program's role in reassuring consumers about ingredient safety and enhancing the competitiveness of U.S. companies in global markets.
ACI representatives are calling on industry members to engage with their congressional representatives and the EPA to voice their support for Safer Choice.
