According to KansasCity.com, more and more college campuses are considering green initiatives as a way to set them apart and boost interest (a.k.a. enrollment). The trend has been growing substantially in states such as Missouri and Kansas who are considering initiatives that include energy and water conservation and reduction in the use of chemicals.
Experts comment that the shift towards green programs has taken hold, but it is up to colleges and universities to lead this change. And, although schools are spending substantial dollars to make the change to green, they are expected to reap the benefits moving forward, particularly in energy savings.
According to the article, "Changing campus culture, from choosing greener cleaning chemicals to building environmentally friendly buildings, is an arduous process, said Bob Berkebile, a Kansas City founder of the U.S. Green Building Council. But as more schools join the movement, it is becoming easier to get campus decision-makers to think green."
