Sealed Air’s Diversey Care division announced the company has fulfilled its years-long commitment with the World Wildlife Fund’s (WWF) Climate Savers program. At the end of 2013, Diversey Care operations recorded a reduction in absolute CO2 emissions by more than 48 percent from 2003 levels.

Initiated in 1999, the Climate Savers program encourages member organizations to drastically reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and influence market or policy developments affecting sustainability. In 2008, Diversey Care originally committed to reduce absolute GHG emissions 8 percent below 2003 levels by 2013, but increased the commitment to 25 percent in 2009.

“From senior leadership to frontline employees, everyone is committed to this program, which helps both the environment and the bottom line,” said Dr. Ilham Kadri, president of Diversey Care.  “We’re proud of the progress we’ve achieved and are excited to set new goals to work toward for the future.”

Diversey Care’s emissions reduction strategy focused on four key areas: 1) company fleet transportation, 2) manufacture sites and operations, 3) offices and laboratories, 4) business air travel. Tactics included converting the North American fleet to higher efficiency vehicles, installing a fuel cell and wind turbines at the company’s North America headquarters in Wisconsin to generate onsite power, and a commitment to using LEED principles in the design and operation of all leased and built facilities.

Added Dr. Kadri, “In addition to our commitment to practice sustainability in what we do, we also deliver a climate positive impact for our customers to become more sustainable in their operations.  We helped customers reduce their emissions through the use of our products and services.  In addition we shared tools, best practices and solutions to enable them to calculate their carbon impact and reduced emissions.”

“Over the last six years, Diversey effectively set a new standard of climate protection excellence for the cleaning and sanitation industry. The Climate Savers work proved the theory to leaders in government and business that companies uncover more savings when they begin to harvest opportunities, always exceed expectations, cutting more GHG than they anticipate. WWF is proud of the business case Diversey championed, a case that dispels the myth that climate protection and prosperity are decoupled,” said Matthew Banks, manager – energy and climate, World Wildlife Fund.

Sealed Air is currently finalizing new company-wide energy and GHG reduction targets within the WWF CS program, which will focus on innovative strategies, collaborative efforts with customers and suppliers, and product and service offerings that support sustainability.
