During the ongoing pandemic and flu season, it’s crucial for healthcare facilities to remain vigilant regarding infection prevention. One device gaining popularity in healthcare is electrostatic sprayers, which can effectively and easily disperse U.S. Environmental Protection Agency-registered disinfectants onto large surface areas in a short amount of time.  

Before implementing an electrostatic sprayer, it’s important to properly vet the technology to ensure it will meet a facility's needs. Dr. J. Hudson Garrett, Jr., an infectious disease expert and Clorox Healthcare spokesperson, has offered up three factors consider when evaluating an electrostatic sprayer for use within a facility: 

1. Efficacy

The electrostatic sprayer should only be used with EPA-registered disinfectants designed to be dispersed via the device, as well as a steady power supply to ensure consistent dispersal of the disinfectant.  

2. Safety

As with any technology, it is important to ensure the safety of the device for both patients and staff. Be sure to read and review the manufacturer's safety precautions located on the product’s EPA master-label.  

3. Compatibility

Any disinfecting solution must be compatible with the healthcare facility’s common surfaces and equipment such as countertops, overbed tables, patient call remotes and medical equipment to prevent equipment malfunction and degradation.
