The first novel influenza A virus infection of the 2020-2021 flu season has been reported to the Centers For Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC), according to its most recent FLUVIEW report. 

Influenza A is one of four types of influenza virus, along with B, C and D, according to the CDC's website. Influenza A and Influenza B are what cause the seasonal flu season. Influenza A is the only type of influenza virus believed to cause influenza pandemics.

The most recent FLUVIEW report, which is based on data from the week of Jan. 23, shows that flu activity remains unusually low in the United States for this time of year. The report included an ILI (influenza-like illness) Activity Map that demonstrates the level of ILI activity in each state. The states are then labeled based on ILI activity level in a descending order of severity, the order being very high, high, moderate, low and minimal. Oklahoma displayed the highest level of ILI activity of any state, and that activity was only classified as "low."
