Workers throughout the United States might be surprised when they find out their job is considered unhealthy by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
According to Louisiana State University's Daily Reveille, the BLS released a list of the unhealthiest jobs in America November 2007 based on the number of injuries and illnesses severe enough to cause workers to miss at least one day of work in 2006.
But workers will not receive a badge of honor for the jobs that topped the list.
BLS reported construction worker, office and administrative staff, sales staff, nursing aides, janitors, registered nurses, waiters and computer specialists as having the eight unhealthiest jobs in America.
According to the article, janitors are put at risk because they are constantly being exposed to hazardous chemicals.
Ellen James, facility service supervisor for West Campus Apartments, said she has had some problems with hazardous chemicals in the past.
"We had some problems a few years ago with cleaning supplies that were too strong," James said. "Workers said they couldn't breathe and would have to take a break."
James said there have also been issues with the gloves her staff used.
"The gloves with the powder inside would cause some workers to break out," James said.
James also said the workers have to always be careful while cleaning.
"You never know what you will come in contact with while cleaning bathrooms," James said.
