California Governor Schwarzenegger has vetoed bills AB 888, AB1058, and AB35, which mandate LEED standards in commercial, residential, and public California buildings. The Governor explained that while he supports the development of green building standards and shares the goals of the bills, he vetoed them on the grounds that building standards should not be statutory and should not be dictated by private entities. BOMA California supports green and sustainable practices but does not support such as a mandate.

Instead of signing the bills, Governor Schwarzenegger encouraged state agencies to review nationally recognized programs and glean from them standards that promote green and energy efficient practices. He also directed the California Building Standards Commission to work with state agencies in adopting green standards for construction for the 2010 code adoption process.
