The Southern reported that new state legislation in Illinois will soon become reality. Officials believe it is well on its way to passing both houses of the General Assembly. If passed, the Green Cleaning Schools Act would establish guidelines and specifications for environmentally sensitive cleaning and maintenance products for use in school facilities.

The bill has already received the support of the Senate Education Committee and is expected to be just as popular in the Senate. Once passed, schools will have 90 days to begin implementing the guidelines and specifications. The policy will be enforced in all elementary and secondary public and non-public schools.

According to the article, "schools should exclusively purchase and use environmentally sensitive cleaning products, but may first deplete their existing cleaning and maintenance supply stocks and implement the new requirements in the procurement cycle for the following school year."
