Plastic bottles in a recycling bin.

The city infamous for taking a long time to develop proved that, when it comes to environmental impact, small changes can in fact happen in one day. Rome recently launched a system that provides credit towards public transportation whenever someone inserts plastic bottles into special recycling bins, reports Fox News.

Last week the city dispersed three machines that will operate outside of subway stations for at least a year. When passengers walk up to the machine and insert a plastic bottle they’re credited five cents towards smartphone apps which can be used to purchase transportation.

Rome’s recycle-to-ride program is yet another plan in a list of schemes devised to reduce plastic waste. Earlier this year, it was reported that college students have developed a massive vacuum built to pick up the micro plastic that’s washed ashore many beaches worldwide. The robot, known as Hoola One, has been used on beaches in Hawaii.
