Gabriel Velasquez, a custodian at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, didn’t run for cover when he saw chaos unfold on the evening of October 1. Instead, according to WXYZ reporting, he stood his ground and directed hotel guests to shelter, despite being shot himself.
Velasquez was reportedly working inside a restroom when shots rang out from the 32nd floor, targeting concertgoers on the other side of the Las Vegas Strip. According to reports, he heard what sounded like firecrackers, followed by screams.
Upon inspection, Velasquez witnessed people scattering from the area in search of shelter. While directing guests to take cover within the restroom, it became apparent that Velasquez had been shot during the process.
Once the shooting stopped, Velasquez was able to seek help for his injuries and is expected to make a full recovery.
