Midland (Mich.) Public School custodians wont go down without a fight. According to OurMidland.com, workers, as well as their supporters, gathered to fight the board’s consideration of hiring an outside janitorial company to save money. Supporters of in-house custodians claim that any savings would be minimal because of the variety of variables.

The school board claims that no decision has been made and they are only asking for proposals from prospective companies so they can vote on the best option by spring.

Custodians argue that they do more than clean. They set up and tear down for activities inside the school, act as security guards by walking teachers out to their cars at night and reporting on suspicious situations. They even act as mentors and friends to children. If the jobs were outsourced, none of that would happen. Not to mention, the roughly 52 custodians who lost their jobs might move their families out of the area in search of new jobs.
