superbug or Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) bacteria

A new exhibit, “Superbugs: The Fight For Our Lives,” at the Science Museum in London, explores potential solutions to the “unprecedented global threat of antibiotic resistance,” according to an article from ES Go London.

The exhibit includes personal stories of superbug encounters along with the latest research into diagnostics and the search for new antimicrobials. Also on display are infection control products including door handles with built-in sanitizers and fluorescent bandages that glow in the presence of bacterial infection and unusual sources of potential new antibiotics — leafcutter ants and komodo dragons.

Dangerous multidrug-resistant infections are on the rise in children across the country, according to a report in the Journal of the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society. From 2007 to 2015, the number of kids treated in hospitals for certain types of multidrug-resistant infections rose 750 percent, according to another article.

This exhibition shows how dangerous hospital-acquired infections can be.
