The results of the 2017 Healthy Schools, Healthy People, It's a SNAP National Awards Program have been announced. Healthy Schools, Healthy People, It's a SNAP is a hands-on initiative from the American Cleaning Institute and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, designed to help keep students in school and learning by promoting clean hands. Since 2003, schools have received recognition for their handwashing projects.
The goal of the program is to:
• Improve student handwashing
• Reduce absenteeism
• Help the school community stay healthy
Top Recipient Award:
Congratulations go to Litchfield HS FCCLA from Litchfield, Minnesota who earned the national award for their “Healthy Holidays” campaign. During Halloween, the team created a Germ City and taught correct handwashing procedures using “SSSRD” as our mnemonic (Soap, Scrub, Sing, Rinse, and Dry). The team conducted a bread experiment for second graders for Thanksgiving and videos for Christmas and Valentine's Day.
Runner-Up Award Recipients:
The Brickell Academy at Old Donation School from Virginia Beach, Virginia earned a runner-up award with their “Expert Germ Stopper Ambassadors” program. A local doctor teamed up with her daughter's third grade class to train the ambassadors and implement the program to the four other third grade class totaling one hundred students.
Medford, OK FCCLA from Medford, Oklahoma also earned a runner-up award. “ABC, I'm Germ Free” included story time, handwashing demonstrations and practice for a local Head Start and activities for Junior High and High School students.
