A new mobile app is making quite a splash among festival 'goers' by allowing everyday citizens to "rent" out their domestic toilets in exchange for a small fee. New Orleans-based Airpnp — a play on the popular room rental service, Airbnb — launched in early February and has been racking up users ever since. What started out out as a 'quasi-joke,' according to its founders, has turned into a growing business.
According to the European Cleaning Journal, the founders came up with the idea after running into problems while trying to find available restrooms at a festival. The pair added that their app is helpful to patrons who want to avoid legal ramifications that can occur when one — likely not soberly — chooses to urniate in public, and gets caught.
Instead, the app connects festival attendees with residents who are willing to rent their private toilets at up to $5 a trip. ECJ reports users can selct a toilet based on images posted to the Airpnp website, where user can also view brief amenity descriptions, including "levels of cleanliness and thickness of toilet paper." They can even rate their "pee experience."
So far, about 2,000 people had signed up to use the service by the start of Mardi Gras, and around 20 householders had offered up their toilets. The founders hope to expand the services to other regions across the country.
