The cost of the penalties the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) delivers for workplace safety and health violations increased Friday, according to OSHA.

The maximum penalty for violations was increased due to cost-of-living adjustments for 2021.

According to the penalties page on OSHA's website, the maximum penalty for serious, other-than-serious, and posting requirements is now $13,653 per violation. A failure to abate violation can now cost up to $13,653. The cost of a willful or repeated violation can carry a penalty of up to $136,532 per violation.

Some states carryout their own occupational safety laws. States that operate their own occupational safety and health plans are required to adopt maximum penalties that are are at least as effective as the United States Department of Labor's OSHA.
