Regularly training employees on steps to take in a disaster is always going to be beneficial, but actually setting up a mock emergency takes training one step further. Whangarel Hospital, New Zealand, experienced a mock emergency where dozens of "patients" invaded the emergency room with symptoms of bird flu.

Not only was the exercise beneficial to doctors and nurses on staff, the cleaning department got in on the action as well. Cleaning crews trained on what they could do to help prevent the spread of infection throughout the hospital, as well as what steps should be taken to maintain a safe and healthy environment for hospital staff working with infected patients.
