According to an Associated Press article.
A bill likely to come to a vote this week in the state Senate would require criminal background checks every five years for all Ohio school employees.
And, the names would have to be run through a national FBI database.
Currently, Ohio law requires background checks only for teachers, administrators and counselors, not janitors and other workers — the bill will likely change that. In most cases, the reviews look only for crimes committed in Ohio.
The bill approved earlier this week by the Senate Education Committee also would give the state new power to revoke a teacher's license once it has expired. And, the legislation calls for a code of conduct for Ohio school employees, similar to those for the state's doctors and lawyers.
