As winter germ season peaks, Chuck Crawford, Ph.D., Chief Innovation Officer at GOJO, makers of PURELL, offers these five tips to minimize the spread of illness-causing germs at a Big Game party or any social gathering. This applies to home parties, but also those hosted in schools, universities, healthcare facilities, long-term care, and offices.
1. Get a Flu Shot – Health experts emphasize that getting vaccinated is the most crucial step to prevent the flu, and it's not too late to do so.
2. Disinfect Key Germ Hotspots – Germs can survive on hard surfaces for up to 24 hours. Disinfect areas before and after the party using a surface spray on high-touch spots such as tabletops, countertops, remote controls, keyboards, doorknobs, sinks, light switches, faucet handles, tubs, and toilets.
3. Opt for Hugs and High Fives and Avoid Touching Your Eyes, Nose and Mouth – The Big Game is a time for fun and togetherness. While celebrating, enjoy the hugs and high fives, but avoid spreading germs by not touching your eyes, nose, and mouth. Use a tissue or cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing.
4. Show Your Attendees You Care – Provide utensils and tongs for all buffet items, including chips. Placing a bottle of hand sanitizer at the start of the buffet line shows you care about killing germs that may cause illness on your guests' hands before they enjoy the feast.
5. Promote Hand Hygiene in the Restroom – Washing hands with soap and water after using the restroom is vital for personal and public health. Impress your guests by offering a soap that moisturizes and effectively washes away dirt and germs without harsh ingredients.
