The total of H1N1 swine flu cases confirmed in the United States rose above 2,500 Monday, officially surpassing Mexico’s total cases and topping the list of world countries affected. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have confirmed 2,618 cases of H1N1 flu, and a third death, in Washington state, has been attributed to the virus strain.
Health officials expect cases to continue to be reported this week as the virus spreads. Transmission is ongoing, and though the virus appears to be mild, officials warn it could mutate into new strains.
