As one of the UK's top universities, the University of York takes its teaching responsibilities very seriously. And this does not stop at academic staff and students. The University is pioneering a 'cleaning school' for its cleaning staff, in which they are taught how to clean effectively - because proper floor cleaning can play a key part in reducing the risk of slip and trip related accidents. In the longer term, it's hoped that the cleaners who have gained British Institute of Cleaning Sciences (BICS) qualifications at the University's Cleaning Science Training School will be able to go to other organisations and pass on the skills they have learned.

Health and Safety Inspector Julian Franklin said:
"We would like to commend the University for setting up the Cleaning Science Training School. Slips and trips in the workplace can have very serious consequences for the individual concerned, as well as their employer, and we're delighted that the University is at the forefront of training its staff so that the possibility of slip-related accidents is greatly reduced."
