Retail Giant Wal-Mart, which has in the past been the target of environmentalists, wants to be synonymous with the green movement, reports ABC News.
Stores are slowly being outfitted for higher efficiency, with skylights, paper receipt reduction and green toilets.
Last year, CEO Lee Scott outlined plans for a sustainability initiative, which included cutting energy use by 30 percent and cutting greenhouse gas emissions at existing stores by 20 percent within seven years. The company also wants to reduce solid waste by 25 percent in the next three years.
The chain, with 4,000 U.S. stores, is the nation’s top electricity consumer and has the second-largest fleet of private trucks.
