The Association for Professionals in Infection Prevention and Epidemiology (APIC) today announced that Linda R. Greene, RN, MPS, CIC, FAPIC , manager, Infection Prevention, at Highland Hospital, University of Rochester in Rochester, New York, and former APIC president, will be honored with the prestigious Carole DeMille Achievement Award for her visionary leadership and significant contributions to the field of infection prevention and control (IPC).

The award is given annually to an infection prevention professnional who best exemplifies the ideals of Carole DeMille, a pioneer in the IPC field.

“It is a privilege to present Linda with the Carole DeMille Achievement Award for her insight, leadership, and substantive contributions to the practice of infection prevention,” says 2020 APIC president Connie Steed. “Throughout her 30 plus year career in infection prevention, Linda has tackled a range of complex issues, addressing concerns not only within her facility, her region and her state, but also at the national and international level as well.”  

An APIC member since 1988, Greene has been certified in infection control since 1997 and has extensive experience in IPC in the acute care, long-term care, and ambulatory surgery settings.  Over the past three decades, Greene has contributed extensively to acute care, long-term care, quality improvement, antimicrobial stewardship, healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) research and education in IPC. Before becoming a member of the APIC Board of Directors in 2019, Greene held various leadership roles in her local APIC chapter.

She was secretary of the APIC Board from 2012 to 2013 and served as president of the board for APIC Consulting Services in 2015. Then in 2017, Greene served as APIC president. Greene is currently a manager of Infection Prevention, at Highland Hospital University of Rochester in Rochester, New York, and continues to serve APIC in myriad ways, including as an advisor and contributor to APIC position papers and implementation guides; as an APIC representative to the 2020 CDC Decennial Steering Committee; and as a frequent presenter at regional, national, and international conferences.

The author of dozens of peer-reviewed publications, Greene also served on the American Journal of Infection Control (AJIC) editorial board from 2015 to 2017. In 2006, APIC recognized Green's contributions to IPC by naming her a Hero of Infection Prevention.
