Restroom Odor Removal Solutions

Odor control remediation previously involved masking odors with heavy perfumes, such as cherry or pine, says Kari Hus, president, Pacific Janitorial Supply, Santa Clara, California. But these cover ups only overcome bad odors with a strong scent for a period of time instead of breaking down odor molecules.

“Scents achieved from essential oils are part of today’s mix to help neutralize or eliminate odor molecules instead of masking it, and today’s technology is making that easier to accomplish,” says Hus. “Metered aerosol odor control units are commonly used in healthcare and educational facilities. These touch-free devices are easily programmed to match the facility’s odor control needs. Scents range from energizing and invigorating to calming and soothing.”

In addition to metered aerosol odor control units, there are fluid fragrance cartridges that emit scent at a constant level.

No matter which device is used, its placement is critical. Fragrance dispensers should be installed at or near nose level to achieve the best results.

“Placement of scent requires a strategy based on the layout, as well as the ventilation, of the restroom facility,” says Bergholtz. “Facility managers should look at airflow throughout their facility in order to maximize a product’s effectiveness.”

Certain facilities will also require additional odor remediation. For example, in gyms and fitness centers, shower rooms and restrooms are connected.

“Now you have moisture and warm temperatures in which bacteria can thrive…and also cause odors,” says Bergholtz.

In these facilities, humidity control is essential, as is a regular schedule of heavy duty cleaning, including grout, walls, ceilings, using a neutralizer, applying disinfectant, as well as a combination of odor control devices.
