SDA Announces Board Of Directors

Frank Sherman and Susan Nestegard were named chair and vice-chair to the Soap and Detergent Association’s (SDA) board of directors at the board’s meeting and convention in Boca Raton, Fla.

 

Sherman is the president and general manager of Akzo Nobel’s Surfactants Business Unit, Chicago. Nestegard is the senior vice president of research, development and engineering, and chief technical officer of Ecolab Inc., St. Paul, Minn.

There were a total of 25 executives elected to SDA’s membership for two-year terms on the board of directors.

The Washington, D.C.-based association also awarded Dr. Stewart Gloyer, who recently retired from Evonik Goldschmidt Corp., the association’s Elva Walker Spillane Distinguished Service Award.

Gloyer served in a number of technical and leadership positions with Witco Chemical Corp., and Evonik Goldschmidt Corp.

The award recognizes exceptional service to the SDA, which promotes the growth and interests of the association and the industries it represents.

Chip Hornsby Named Chairman Of NAW

 

Members of the National Association of Wholesaler-Distributors (NAW), Washington, D.C., elected its officers for 2008.

Chip Hornsby, group chief executive, Wolseley PLC, Theale, England, replaces Raymon A. York as chairman.

Randy Lindberg, president, western region, United Natural Foods Inc., Rocklin, Calif., was named chairman-elect.

Robert N. Taylor, president and CEO of Do it Best Corp., Ft. Wayne, Ind., will assume the role of first vice chairman.

Dennis G. Hatchell was voted second vice chairman. He is president and COO of Alex Lee Inc., Winston Salem, N.C.

Mark Kramer, president and CEO of Laird Plastics Inc., Boca Raton, Fla., was appointed secretary.

COMPANY NOTES

 

AmSan, Pompano Beach, Fla., opened an Atlanta-area distribution center. The center is a 147,000 square-foot facility and stocks over 28,000 products.

Edward Don & Co., North Riverside, Ill., has joined Network Services Co., Mt. Prospect, Ill.

The Malish Corp., Willoughby, Ohio, is celebrating its 60-year anniversary this year.

Allied West Paper Corp., Yuma, Ariz., has won a conditional permit for a new paper plant in Yuma.

Rubbermaid Commercial Products, Winchester, Va., was recognized as 2007 Vendor of the Year from Paper Products Co., Pittsburgh.

Cellynne Corp., Haines City, Fla., is expanding its paper converting operations. The company has announced plans for expansion at its company headquarters in Haines City along with opening a new converting facility in China.

Biotal Technologies LLC, Alpharetta, Ga., opened a research and development center in Cardiff, Wales.

BioCanadian, Montreal, Quebec, was named the Canadian distributor of GEMTEK Products.

W.W. Grainger Inc., Chicago, announced the largest product expansion in its history. There is a 32 percent increase in the number of products in the 2008 catalog.


PLAYERS

 

The O’Dell Corp., Ware Shoals, S.C., appointed Tim Hodges executive vice president and named Paul O’Dell vice president of national sales and accounts.

Kevin Fain moved from manager of special projects to purchasing manager and vendor relations and Jerry Goldman will transition from manufacturing manager to the position of regional sales representative.

The company also appointed William “Benjie” Prince to manufacturing manager.

Spartan Chemical Co. Inc., Maumee, Ohio, promoted Jack Ellison to regional manager of the Connecticut region. He has worked with the company directly or indirectly over the past 12 years.

EcoSMART Technologies, Atlanta, appointed Guy Russell vice president of the commercial division. He will manage the health, jan/san, institutional, animal health and industrial market sectors for the company.

Mike Murphy was hired as vice president of business development of Network Services Co., Mt. Prospect, Ill. Murphy has over 20 years of sales management experience in the industry, most recently as vice president of sales for GCA Services Group.

Robyn Conner was hired as financial controller of Southeastern Paper Group, Spartanburg, S.C.

Charlene Bayer, Paul S. Darby, Robert Donofrio, Charles P. Gerba, Jay Glasel, Dennis Kunkel, Wanda Phipatanakul, Robert W. Powitz, Steve Robinson, Philip M. Tierno Jr., Bennett Weintraub and Michael Zuckerman were named to the technical advisory board of KaiScience, Boise, Idaho.

Peter Wagner was hired as director of marketing and sales support for L&M Construction Chemicals, Omaha, Neb. He will focus on the company’s Performance Flooring Systems and assist on education and training for the company’s North American Certified Applicator Network.

Malvern, Penn.-based Nilfisk CFM named district manager Tim Pelletier the company's 2007 salesman of the year.

Barbara J. Beck, executive vice president of Manpower Inc., has been named to the board of directors for Ecolab Inc., St. Paul, Minn.

 

OBITUARY

Dale Norgen, co-founder of Dalco Corp., Minneapolis, and former owner of Brissman-Kennedy, St. Paul, Minn., passed away January 12.

Norgen began his career as a salesman for National Soap in Minneapolis. In 1959 he co-founded Dalco along with two other people.

He resigned as president of Dalco in 1970 and bought Brissman-Kennedy in 1973. As owner of Brissman-Kennedy, Norgen built QualChem, a chemical manufacturing company.

During this time, Norgen came across a mixing machine that mixed drinks in a bar. Norgen and other company personnel tested the unit and developed one that would take seven different raw materials and mix them with water into a cleaning solution.

He sold the idea and system to 3M and the company brought the product to the market under the name CompuBlend.

In 1999, Norgen stepped away from day-to-day business activity in the industry when he sold Brissman-Kennedy to AmSan.
