Huntsman and O’Rourke to Speak at SDA’s Annual Meeting in Florida
Jon M. Huntsman, one of the chemical industry’s leading executives, with political satirist P.J. O’Rourke, are the two featured speakers at the 2002 Soap and Detergent Association (SDA) Annual Meeting and Industry Convention, January 23-27, 2002, in Boca Raton, Florida.

The forum will bring together manufacturers and suppliers of cleaning supplies, but it is open to end users and others who have interest in the soap and detergent industry. Ernie Rosenberg, SDA president, says the convention, celebrating SDA’s 76th anniversary, will help distributors discover new purchasing and servicing opportunities.

Huntsman is chairman of the Huntsman Corp., the world’s largest privately held chemical company. He is a past recipient of the Kaveler Award, given to the chemical industry’s most outstanding chief executive officer.

O’Rourke is the foreign affairs editor and a political writer for Rolling Stone magazine. Formerly, he was the editor-in-chief of Nation Lampoon and is also author of several best-selling books, including Eat the Rich and Give War a Chance.


ISSA Announces 2002 European Board of Representatives
The 2002 ISSA European Board of Representatives assumed its duties at the general meeting during the ISSA/Interclean-USA 2001 show in Orlando. Representing three different European regions, three individuals are new to the board as a result of the elections held in July.

Niels Ysbrandy, Ettore Products Co., Hilversum, Netherlands, will represent the Benelux region. Fridrik Ingi Fridriksson, Besta ehf, Kopavogur, Iceland, will represent the Nordic region. And Toni D’Andrea, AFIDAMP, Milan, Italy, will be the representative for for the Mediterranean countries of Italy, Greece, Slovenia, Spain and Portugal.


The Southern California Sanitary Supply Association (SCSSA) recently held its Operation Clean Sweep in downtown Los Angeles. Due to the events of September 11, the regional association changed the date of the event. A group of 45 volunteers cleaned Para Los Ninos Pre-School and Day Care on the new date.


The National Association of Wholesaler-Distributors (NAW) has contributed $43,000 to the September 11 Fund to aid the families of the victims from New York and Washington attacks. Directly following the attacks, the association announced that a portion of its revenues would be donated to the fund. In addition, many individual wholesaler-distributors made voluntary contributions.


The National Paper Trade Association (NPTA) will reach its 100th anniversary in 2003 and has elected to change its name to NPTA Alliance in order to reflect the organization’s new attitude of unity.


James Glassman, noted economic journalist, and Senator Frank Murkowski (R-Ark.) were two of the speakers that addressed the Consumer Specialty Products Association’s (CSPA) December annual meeting. Glassman gave a major address about the state of the economy, and Murkowski, former chairman of the Energy and Natural Resources Committee, spoke at the general session.

Diamond Chemical Aids New York Hospital
Shortly after the World Trade Center attacks, St. Vincent’s Hospital, a major hospital involved in the treatment of survivors, was overwhelmed with the need for cleaning chemicals. Driver Franklin Collado of Diamond Chemical Co., East Rutherford, N.J., was escorted by New Jersey and New York police to St. Vincent’s to deliver the chemicals as a donation to the relief effort. Diamond and St. Vincent’s continue to partner in the New York relief effort.


Athea, Milwaukee, has named George and Mary Bauer of MarGeo, Southern Pines, S.C., as its 2001 Chemical Specialists of the Year.


Pro-Link, San Antonio, has announced the addition of a new distributor, Maintex Inc., City of Industry, Calif. The company is headed by Linda Silverman and Stu Silverman. Their father, Ralph Silverman, founded the company in 1960.


Pro-Team, Boise, Idaho, has been recognized as one of Idaho’s top 75 private companies, according to the “Idaho Statesman,” the state’s largest newspaper. Pro-Team is a leading manufacturer of backpack, canister, hip-style and upright vacuum cleaners.


Lambskin Specialties, a manufacturer of quality products for the jan/san industry for over 35 years, announced at the ISSA show in Orlando that The RTF Group, Chicago, led by Richard Friedman, was its national sales leader for the previous year. It was also announced that Nancy Spertus and Peter Davidson of Marathon Marketing were the recipients of a trip to Hawaii in recognition of their outstanding sales achievements.

Greg Ford, vice president of sales for Spartan Chemical Co., Maumee, Ohio, announced that Earnie Fisher, Doug Peterson, Gary Rugg and Dick McCray have all been promoted to regional sales manager positions. Fisher will be responsible for the company’s Toledo sales territory, Peterson the Cincinnati region, Rugg the northern Indiana region and McCray will serve Oklahoma City.


Pete Rowan of Unified Sales, Bethesda, Md., has been awarded the designation of Certified Professional Manufacturers’ Representative (CPMR) as a result of successfully completing a three-year executive education program. Rowan is one of more than 1,000 professional sales people across the United States to have earned the CPMR certification.


Georgia Pacific, Atlanta, announced that George Hartmann, president of its North American commercial tissue business for consumer products, has elected to retire from the company. John O’Donnell, formerly vice president of operations integration, has been promoted to president of the commercial business.


Rich Janss, CEO of Basic Coatings, Des Moines, Iowa, has announced that Roy Blackburn has been named president of Basic Coatings. Roy brings nearly 30 years of experience in the coatings industry, most recently with The Flecto Co.


Bruce Trahey has joined Ranpak Corp. as sales representative of Dallas. Trahey brings more than 12 years of sales and sales management experience to his new position. Previously, he worked with Janpak Supply Solutions.


United Receptacle of Pottsville, Pa., recently named Layton Dodson as vice president of sales and marketing. Dodson joined the company in 1999. In his new position, he will be responsible for all sales and marketing functions of the company.


Obituary

Jack Myron Bernstein, 58, of Prairie Village, Kan., passed away October 18, 2001, in Florida. He was sales manager for Regal Distributors, Lenexa, Kan. Previously, Bernstein was sales manager for Paper Supply Co. and a 20-year salesman for Capital Paper Co., Indianapolis. He was a former member of the Indianapolis Hebrew Congregation and is survived by his wife, Bobbi Jo Cohen Bernstein, three daughters and three grandchildren.
