While reporting last month’s cover story, “Running on Empty,” Deputy Editor Nick Bragg discovered that many jan/san distributors are cutting back on traveling to educational events, especially national ones, due to the high cost of gas. During this climate of economic uncertainty, it’s definitely time to think locally.
If you’re not already a member, look into joining your local, state or regional sanitary supply association. From coast (Southern California Sanitary Supply Association) to coast (New England Sanitary Supply Association) and everywhere in between, there are numerous organizations available that vary in size and scope. Some offer their own trade shows and seminars while others simply provide the opportunity to network with other distributors. You’ll be able to share challenges with business owners and bounce questions off colleagues who are experiencing similar situations — without having to travel very far.
Another way to network without paying for it at the pump would be to try social networking online. Sites such as Facebook, LinkedIn, MySpace or Plaxo allow users to communicate nationally without leaving the office.

I myself wasn’t able to attend ISSA/INTERCLEAN® North America either, but for a different reason. During the show, my wife and I welcomed our 6-pound, 11-ounce son, Grahm Oliver, into the world on Sept. 9. Thank you to all who stopped by the booth to pass along your congratulations and support.
