Golden Star, Kansas City, Mo., is celebrating the company’s 100-year anniversary this year at ISSA/INTERCLEAN® .

The company started in response to Henry Ford’s model T, since the vehicles were made of unfinished steel, leaving them exposed to corrosion. Golden Star responded to the problem by creating protection polish for the vehicles.

The company’s product line expanded to cleaners and polishes for a variety of hard surfaces. In 1960 the textile portion of the company expanded and the dirt cotton “dust control” mats were introduced. In 1970 the company debuted synthetic yarn mats.

SCA Earns Acclaim

Philadelphia-based SCA Tissue North America has been recognized by the “Green” Hotels Association and for their commitment to workplace safety by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).

SCA partnered with the “Green” Hotels Association to encourage, promote and support ecological consciousness in the hospitality industry.

The company is one of four paper products companies approved by the association as an Ally Member.

Ally Member status was granted based on the company’s use of recycled raw materials, a mill of origin program that cuts transportation fuel usage, process chlorine-free bleaching fiber treatment, industry-leading water conservation initiatives and innovative dispensing tissue and towel systems that reduce paper consumption and waste.

The association empowers lodgers to implement ways to protect the environment while saving money. The organization provides member hotels with towel-rack hangers and sheet-changing cards that ask guests to consider using towel and linens more than once to conserve energy and water.

“Partnering with the ‘Green’ Hotels Association is part of our ongoing commitment to help the hospitality and lodging industry reduce their environmental footprint,” says Don Lewis, president of SCA Tissue.

SCA was also recently recognized by OSHA. The company’s converting plant in Greenwich, N.Y., with Star status in the agency’s Voluntary Protection Programs (VPP).

To achieve VPP Star status, applicants must demonstrate a high degree of management support and employee involvement in workplace safety and health, comprehensive safety and health training for all employees, and high-quality worksite hazard analysis protocols, prevention and control programs.

The facility also had to exceed average safety criteria, a requirement the company surpassed by being 50 percent under the national average for OSHA incidents for its type of facility.
