ISSA, Lincolnwood, Ill., has announced the officers who will serve on the 2008 ISSA Board of Directors. The new board will assume its duties at the ISSA General Meeting on Friday, Oct. 26, at 8 a.m., during ISSA/INTERCLEAN® North America, held at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Fla.

ISSA, Lincolnwood, Ill., has renewed its alliance with the U.S. Occupational Safety and Heath Administration (OSHA) for the purpose of promoting a safe work environment for all workers in the cleaning industry.

First signed in 2005, the alliance provides ISSA members and the cleaning industry with a wealth of information and guidance on various occupational safety and health topics, including hazard communication; bloodborne pathogens; personal protective equipment; and slips, trips and falls in the workplace.

ISSA anticipates an increased emphasis on warehouse safety and issues related to personal protective equipment. Through the alliance, ISSA has created the ISSA Safety and Health Portal, www.issa.com/osha, a Web page dedicated exclusively to protecting the health and safety of cleaning industry employees.

In addition, ISSA is collaborating with OSHA representatives on the development of a Safety and Health Topics Web page that is focused specifically on the cleaning industry and is expected to launch in the coming months.

The National Paper Trade Association Inc. (NPTA), Farmingdale, N.Y., announced it has selected SmithBucklin as its full-service management company.

Two of SmithBucklin’s immediate priorities during the transition will be the September NPTA Annual Convention and the October DistriPakUSA trade show. NPTA will relocate to SmithBucklin’s Chicago office by January 1, 2008.

Alexandria, Va.-based Association of Higher Education Facilities (APPA), the association dedicated to leadership in educational facilities, announced it has created the first credentialing standard for the educational facilities profession. The Educational Facilities Professional (EFP) credential was developed in response to APPA members’ demand as a way to validate the unique knowledge and competence required of an accomplished professional in the field.

ISSA announced that nine cleaning organizations — both contracted and in-house — have recently undergone comprehensive ISSA Cleaning Industry Management Standard (CIMS) assessments and have officially certified to CIMS.

The certified organizations, which are part of a Case Study Program underway through October 2007, include: Bee-Clean Building Maintenance, Canada; Omni Facility Services, Southfield, Mich.; Portland Habilitation Center, Portland, Ore.; Scarlet and Gray Cleaning Service, Cincinnati; ServiceForce USA, LLC, Dulles, Va.; UNICCO, Newton, Mass.; University of Guelph Environmental Services Department; Ontario, Canada; University of Michigan Campus Plant Building and Grounds Services Department (PBGS), Ann Arbor, Mich.; Varsity Contractors, Pocatello, Idaho.

The International Executive Housekeepers Association (I.E.H.A.) will host a “Blue Ribbon” cleaning industry panel during I.E.H.A.’s 41st annual Educational Conference and Convention in conjunction with ISSA/INTERCLEAN® in Orlando, Fla.
The event, which features four experts (Harry Kendrick, R.E.H., Pat Baird, R.E.H., John Poole, R.E.H., and Christopher Kopach) who work in different sectors of the cleaning industry, will be held in room W108ab at the Orange County Convention Center and will take place from 1 p.m. – 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 24.

ISSA announced it has formed the ISSA China Advisory Council. The primary role of the council is to provide feedback to the local ISSA office in Shanghai, China, and help the association refine its services and offerings to the local membership in China.

The ISSA China Advisory Council will meet regularly to make suggestions and serve as a sounding board for new strategies and activities that may be implemented by the ISSA office in Shanghai.

The members of the ISSA China Advisory Council will serve a two-year term, starting September 1, 2007. They will be officially recognized during the opening ceremony of the second ISSA/INTERCLEAN® China exhibition, held in Shanghai, September 19-21, 2007.

 



OBITUARY
SDA Mourns Death Of Former President
Former president of the Soap and Detergent Association (SDA), Theodore E. “Ted” Brenner, passed away on Sunday, August 5.

Brenner served as SDA president for more than 20 years. He joined SDA in 1963 as assistant technical director, and, over the years, was promoted to a variety of senior-level positions, culminating in his appointment as president in 1972. He retired from SDA in 1993.

Brenner was the recipient of the 2006 SDA Elva Walker Spillane Distinguished Service Award, which recognizes individuals who provided extensive or exceptional service to SDA.



COMPANY NOTES
Polymer Group Inc., Charlotte, N.C., announced plans to install a state-of-the-art spunbond line in North America to serve hygiene and other customers in the United States and Mexico.

The new line will increase capacity by approximately 15,000 metric tons for this segment to meet ongoing strong demand for the company’s nonwoven materials. The company expects that commercial production will begin in late 2008.

Rapid Packaging Inc., a distributor of packaging materials, shipping supplies, and packaging machinery and systems based in Minneapolis, has joined Network Services Co., Mt. Prospect, Ill.

New York-based Burke Supply has partnered with Enviro-Solutions, Peterborough, Canada, to market the company’s green cleaning line.

W. W. Grainger Inc., Lake Forest, Ill., announced that it will enhance its North Jersey operations, by expanding several current facilities, relocating some operations, and adding two new locations.

Increasing Grainger’s North Jersey facility by more than 33 percent is expected to enhance its locally tailored inventory by 14 percent, and add nine jobs.

Grainger also announced it is planning to buy back as much as $500 million worth of its own stock through an agreement with New York-based investment firm Goldman Sachs & Co.

The company’s board of directors approved the buyback for up to 10 million shares. The majority of the shares will be repurchased immediately from Goldman Sachs using existing cash and short-term loans.

Effective September 1, 2007, or as contracts allow, Basel, Switzerland-based Lonza, will increase prices on products that contain decyl alcohol.

The products affected include decyl alcohol based quaternary ammonium compounds, surfactants, amine oxides and other derivatives. The prices will increase by a minimum of 10 cents per pound for the 50 percent active and 16 cents per pound for the 80 percent active.

Coverall Cleaning Concepts, Boca Raton, Fla., partnered with Procter & Gamble Professional, Cincinnati, to donate a “Restore the Floor Day” to Boston’s Pine Street Inn homeless shelter on Monday, July 30, dispatching a team to strip and wax the floors in the facility’s staff cafeteria and community room. Coverall supplied the machines and manpower for the project, while Procter & Gamble Professional donated the floor stripper and wax used by the cleaning team.

B O X Packaging Inc., Elgin, Ill., a wholesale packaging supply operation, has announced the release of its 2008 packaging, shipping and industrial supplies catalog. The 2008 edition features over 1,500 new items, including 100 additional sizes of corrugated cartons bringing their stock R.S.C. line to 900-plus sizes.

Rubbermaid Commercial Products, Winchester, Va., recently announced that its employees have achieved their best-ever safety record reaching a two-million hour milestone without a lost-time injury.

AFFLINK, Tuscaloosa, Ala., has been recognized by Atlanta-based Georgia-Pacific Commercial Products as a recipient of the President’s Club Award. The award recognizes top performing distributor customers that are focused on selling innovative, value-added “equity” products and services, as well as support the company’s overall Sales Force Effectiveness programs.

Triangle Residential Options for Substance Abusers Inc. (TROSA), Durham, N.C., a residential and re-educational center helping men, women and young adults with substance abuse problems, will receive waterless urinal systems donated by Waterless Co., LLC, Vista, Calif., for a new facility the organization is building.

The waterless urinals will be installed in the facility’s future gymnasium/community center, now under construction, which will be used by more than 500 patients living at the treatment center.

Strategic Market Alliance (SMA), Oak Brook, Ill., announced the election of its inaugural board of directors. During its recent annual member meeting, the member owners of SMA elected: Ken Hallat, president of Janitors’ Warehouse, Vancouver, British Columbia, as chairman; Bill Hirsch, president of Fulton Paper Co., Atlanta, as vice chairman/secretary; and David Leavy, president of City Supply Co., Egg Harbor, N.J., as treasurer.

Croda Inc., Edison, N.J., appointed Dr. Damian Kelly marketing manager - home care and functional specialties (HC&FS). Kelly will focus on strengthening Croda’s position in the household, industrial and institutional markets.

Kelly has held several positions within the Croda group having first started with Croda Chemicals Europe in 2001 on the Graduate Development Program. His most recent position was business development manager for HC&FS in Latin America.

Pollock Paper Distributors, Grand Prairie, Texas, announced the hire of Eric Harris to the newly created position of vice president of sales.

RohmNova, Mogadore, Ohio, has appointed Bill Magee director of sales and marketing. Magee will manage all paper sales and marketing organizations and activities for both Rohm and Haas and OMNOVA.

EcoStar, Carlisle, Pa., announced the addition of Frank Saldena as the company’s western regional manager. In this position, Saldana will oversee sales for the western region covering the states of California, Oregon, Washington, Montana, Wyoming, Nevada, Arizona, Utah, Colorado, Idaho, New Mexico, Alaska and Hawaii, as well as British Columbia, Canada.

Wood Wyant Inc., Laval, Quebec, recently announced the following hirings: Louise Taillon, marketing director of the Sani-Marc Food and Beverage Division; Sylvain Papillon, district manager-Quebec region; Eric Poulin division manager-Quebec region; and Ernie Janzen, district manager-Alberta South region.

Polymer Group Inc. (PGI), Charlotte, N.C., announced Mike Hale has been named COO and will manage operations for all of PGI’s regional businesses in the United States, Europe, Latin America, Canada and Asia. He most recently served as vice president and general manager for U.S and Europe.

PGI also appointed Bob Dale vice president of research and development, and Fernando Espinosa senior vice president and general manager-Europe.

Jerry Schemm was named engineering project manager for Willoughby, Ohio-based Malish Corp., where his main responsibility will be designing products and overseeing projects for the company’s growing business in China.

Spartan Chemical Co., Inc., Maumee, Ohio, has named Neal Duffy regional manager of its Buffalo, N.Y. region. Duffy has more than 30 years of experience in field sales and management.

The Dow Chemical Co., Midland Mich., elected Dennis H. Reilley, to its Board of Directors.

The retired chairman and CEO of Praxair Inc., Danbury, Conn., and chairman of Covidien Ltd., Mansfield, Mass., brings an understanding of both the chemical and related industries.

BioSafe Systems, East Hartford, Conn., announced Vijay Choppakatla, Ph.D, as director of research.

As the head of BioSafe Systems’ research lab, Choppakatla will manage ongoing trials that examine the efficacy and use of chemistries on various diseases that affect the agriculture, horticulture, dairy and sanitation industries.

Spartanburg, S.C.-based Southeastern Paper Group has hired Shawn Shipman as its accounts payable and rebate specialist.

THE UNITED GROUP, Monroe, La., has tapped Jeff Albritton as chief financial officer.

Albritton will create a proactive, computer-based rebate-tracking program centered on the Member Stockholders (independent distributors) reporting their purchases from the group’s Preferred Suppliers.
