ASSOCIATION NEWS
ISSA and the U.S. Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) recently signed a formal alliance agreement, the goal of which is to promote the health and safety of workers in the cleaning industry.
Hazard communication and floor safety are the main focuses of the alliance, but the groups will also help fulfill educational goals by developing improved training materials and a Web site dedicated to workplace safety in the industry.
The partnership will enhance ISSA’s “Legislative & Regulatory Update,” which will now feature an occupational safety and health article titled “Safety and Health Corner” each month.
This piece will inform readers on the latest pending and adopted rules and regulations that affect workplace health.
There will be easy-to-understand guidance on existing laws, and programs from both OSHA and ISSA will be featured.
The ISSA/INTERCLEAN® Central & Eastern European (CEE) international trade exhibition held in Warsaw, Poland, exceeded expectations. It is organized by ISSA, Amsterdam RAI and the Polish Cleaning Association (PSC). More than 130 exhibitors participated in the show and more than 2,300 visitors attended the trade fair. The Association of Residential Cleaning Professionals (ARCP) will hold its show in conjunction with the ISSA/INTERCLEAN® Conference this year to teach participants more about this segment of the industry. The ARCP estimates there are 18,000 residential cleaning companies in the United States that employ more than 375,000 workers, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The Soap and Detergent Association (SDA) will host its 80th annual meeting and industry convention from January 31 to February 4, 2006, at the Boca Raton Resort & Club, Boca Raton, Fla. The central theme of the event is “SDA at 80: A Vital Past, An Essential Future.” Keynote speakers for the event are ABC News and NPR analyst Cokie Roberts and political commentator Tony Blankley. The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) was recently selected as a recipient of the National Building Museum’s Henry C. Turner Prize for Innovation in Construction Technology. This is the fourth time the award has been given and this year’s prize is being awarded to USGBC because of its promotion of sustainable design and building practices, specifically the development of the LEED® Green Building rating system. The Henry C. Turner Prize recognizes an invention, innovative methodology and/or exceptional leadership by an individual or group involved in construction technology. The Secondary Materials and Recycled Textiles Association (SMART), held in Toronto, drew more than 70 companies for dinner and networking — a record-breaking number of participants. IICRC Develops Course to Tackle Floor Maintenance
Development of a Resilient Floor Maintenance Technician (RFMT) course is underway after the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) approved the course at its annual spring meeting.
The IIRC appointed Stan Hulin, president and CEO of Future Floor Technology Inc., to chair the committee that will develop the course syllabus and examination.
The IICRC has been, for the past five years, expanding upon its original Floor Care Technician (FCT) course through the creation of classes that provide training for each hard-surface floor category. Ultimately, it hopes to offer classes for eight floor types.
Industry members with knowledge about maintenance of resilient floors are welcome to provide input to influence course content.
