COMPANY NOTES
Lonza Inc., Allendale, N.J., reached an agreement with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region II to settle administrative actions alleging that hospital disinfectants registered by Lonza and manufactured and subregistered by others failed efficacy testing conducted at laboratories under contract to the EPA.
Lonza entered into the agreement voluntarily and into cooperation with the EPA, but is disappointed with the agency’s characterization of the agreement. According to Lonza, the agreement provides a way for the company to put the issues behind it and move forward with a program to further enhance its products and resolve the problem of test method reliability while avoiding the cost of litigation.
The company believes the EPA initiated the action based upon an unreliable test method that leads to false failing results. According to Lonza, the method is known as the Association of Official Analytical Chemists (AOAC) Use-Dilution test (UDT) method, and has never been scientifically validated.
