Editor’s Note: Four years ago Sanitary Maintenance surveyed 2,500 jan/san distributors, inviting them to make a case as to why their individual Web sites deserved recognition.
Frequenting jan/san distribution Web sites each working day, the SM editors have taken notice that since 2003, a majority of distributors have taken akin to the e-business model. With that in mind, we felt it was necessary to hand out recognition to those distributors who currently have Web sites that stand above the rest.
So, we developed an online survey, which we e-mailed to a random sample of 6,236 jan/san distributors nationwide.
Foremost, we asked distributors why they thought their Web site deserved to be included as one of “SM’s Best Distributor Web Sites.” Second, we asked distributors to provide a list of capabilities and features they believed set their Web site apart from the rest. Lastly, we asked if their site’s presence has changed in the last four years.
What we found is that a predominant portion of the distribution segment approaches its online presence rather aggressively behind the creation of some fundamentally sound Web sites. We found this to be most surprising, because historically, most distributors have been “behind the curve” when it comes to the adoption of technology within their businesses.
What we discovered from visiting the top survey respondents’ Web sites is that the jan/san distribution sector isn’t lacking in the e-business category. These distributors have answered end users’ needs — offering user-friendly Web sites that contain e-commerce capabilities, extensive product catalogs and educational tools.
The criteria we used to examine survey respondents’ Web sites were the following: e-commerce capabilities; extensive online catalog; educational resources; exceptional design; user-friendliness; and whether the Web site contained detailed contact information. We also considered the company size of the respondents and attempted to look past the level of investment each has made and focus on the Web site’s purpose, content and capabilities.
"What follows are 15 distributor Web sites (in no particular order) that SM’s editors identified as among the industry’s best.
It’s important to note that this is a subjective sampling, and should not be considered representative of what the jan/san distribution industry has to offer.
