Clostridium difficile, commonly known as C. diff, is anything but common when it comes to its effect on hospitals, nursing homes and other health care settings. Causing diarrhea, severe abdominal cramping and pain–and sometimes resulting in in kidney failure or even death–C. diff infects or colonizes 13 out of every 1,000 patients or approximately 7,178 inpatients on any given day, according to a 2008 report by the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology. The same study claimed C. diff infections cost between $17.6 million to $51.5 million and kill between 165 and 438 patients daily.
